Fireworks!!
Explosive tension was in the air. The cars were nose to tail, trundling mm by mm along the marina exit. A certain pup grumbled "we'll never make it on time!"(this pup took the opportunity to get in an extra sniff). What was usually a one laned road had become a two laned road of sorts, filled with evil cars trying to overtake the righteous queuers (like us). It was 8.42 and the pups thought they would never make it. However, we started seeing people on the pedestrian walkway to the left. Some were hanging on tightly to their kids, bent on reaching a more far away field. A few others had decided that the view was good enough, and had parked their cars along the side of the road, and were walking around outside enjoying the fresh air. A few minutes later, the pups saw a grassy field, and lo and behold! Cars were parking on it. The grumbling pup said "ho there, that's a nice spot" and stopped grumbling immediately. However when we reached it, we could not turn right as it was crowded, so this sneaky pup suggested parking along the side of the road beneath the tunnel, and we managed to slot in our car between a truck n a van, and the pups were OUT and running to the field!
At the very front of the field, a line of mamas tended to a line of cameras on tripods while the dads tended to the children. Couples and families without tripods were strewn across the large field. The pups held hands and wove their way across the field, finally finding a nice viewing spot that (according to other pup) had no insects cos we couldn't see them in the dark anyways. The two pups settled down on the grass, leaned back, and let the breeze ruffle thru their hair. Despite a lousy start to the day, I could feel my spirits start to lift. Even the racuous screams of children seemed pleasant to my ears in comparison. I was encouraging the other pup to pee in the bushes as he was rather urgent when all of a sudden, a gigantic pee-inducing blast shook the air!
The fireworks had begun!
Unlike previous years, there was no opening announcement or music, which to me made it a lot less cheesy and a lot more fun! There were some genuine screams of terror (and one frightened yelp, not me) when the fireworks started, but within moments our eyes were filled with the most spectacular display I had ever seen! Perhaps it was their win at the world cup that had inspired them so, but this display from the italian team was simply..wonderful. Soft curlers provided a counterpoint to Loud big explosions, and there were some lower lying star streamers from the bay itself. It was simply magnificent! The crowd was oo-ing and aa-ing, then everything stopped. From the hazarded cars on the expressway a collective revving of engines was heard as the illegally stopped cars prepared to make a quick getaway, when all of a sudden, 2 small fireworks, almost too dark and small to be seen, sparkled in the air. The crowd held its collective breath, while a few loud toots could be heard as unhazarded cars became rehazarded on the expressway. And then it begun again! This time more magnificent than before, a cacophony of colour, sound and shapes whirling through the air. And as the crowd lifted its heads to watch the fireworks, you could almost feel the tensions and unhappiness of the day just drain away..As adults once again became children in their open-mouthed wonder.
The fireworks ended off with 1 minute of "fireworks spam", all the different types of fireworks made a reappearance. There were some extra big fireworks, that were so loud they reverberated twice around the buildings! They were so large that they looked as if they were really close to you. I felt like I could just reach out and touch them. A magnificent end to the most magnificent display of pyrotechnics I have ever seen. A true puppy outing indeed.
